Are you just getting started with Pilates and wonder whether you want to take Pilates mat classes or try an equipment class?
Do you love equipment classes and wonder if you need, or are neglecting, your mat classes?
If you have the opportunity to use equipment, that's great, but don't knock the mat.
The equipment is definitely symbolic of Pilates, however that doesn't mean a good old fashioned mat class isn't worth your time.
Just about every benefit the Pilates method has to offer can be achieved through mat work.
Mat Classes give you the Benefits.
Benefits include a total core workout, but mat classes are not limited to just toning, improving flexibility, bettering posture and using more efficient movement, along with the body/mind connection.
Mat Classes cover the Basics.
Learn the integral basics such as neutral spine, properly engaged core, shoulder and pelvic stability, along with full breathing. Learning these basics on the mat, where there are fewer things to keep up, with makes it that much easier to use when you are on the equipment.
Mat Classes set you up for Success.
A mat class will give you the support to stick with it plus the instructor feedback you need to make sure you are doing everything right to reach your goals and to keep on going.
Mat Skills Are Equipment Skills.
All mat exercises teach skills that translate and relate directly to the equipment exercises.

After your workout, enjoy making our P/oP Irish Soda Bread at home!
The thought of making homemade bread may send you running scared, but baking Irish soda bread is one of the quickest and easiest bread recipes you can make because it is a “quick bread.” This quick bread gets its rise from baking soda instead of using yeast as in other bread recipes. You can also enjoy it anytime not just during St. Patrick’s Day holiday. To make Irish Soda Bread you’ll need the following…
IRISH SODA BREAD
Ingredients:
- 1 and 3/4 cups buttermilk
- 1 egg, preferably Large
- 4 and 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (plus a bit more for your hands and work surface)
- 3 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 4 and 1/2 Tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cubed (don’t skimp on the butter)
- 1 cup raisins, golden and/or regular (instead of raisins, try 1 cup of nuts or dried cranberries/dried blueberries/currants.)
1. Preheat oven to 425°F. Lightly grease a 8-10 inch cast iron skillet or cake pan with butter or nonstick spray.
2. Whisk the buttermilk and egg together in a small bowl. Set aside.
3. Whisk the flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, and salt together in a large bowl.
4. Cut in the butter using a pastry blender, two forks/knives, or your fingers.
Work the dough until into coarse crumbs, then fold in the raisins with a rubber spatula or wooden spoon.
5. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk mixture. Gently fold the dough together until dough is too stiff to stir. With floured hands, work the dough into a ball. Turn the dough ball out onto a floured work surface and knead the dough for about 30 seconds or until all the flour is moistened. Dough should be slightly sticky, but if it is too sticky add a little more flour as needed. Best to not over knead.
6. Transfer the dough to the prepared skillet/pan. Using a lightly buttered serrated knife, score an + on the top of loaf.
7. Bake until the bread is golden brown and center appears cooked through, about 45 minutes. Loosely cover the bread with aluminum foil halfway through baking if there is heavy browning on top.
8. Remove skillet/pan from the oven and allow bread to cool for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.
Enjoy!

Happy 2nd Anniversary P/oP!
Happy 2nd anniversary to our P/oP Family.
It has been another great year with so much to celebrate and be grateful.
We had to say farewell to Allison and Arden who both sadly moved away.
Goodbye and RIP to Fred whose spirit lives on in the studio, along will his Maxim magazines.
We welcome Frankie London Barnes, our youngest addition to the P/oP family. Hurry back Brittney.
We are pleased to have Pilates instructor Toni Maddocks join our group. Certified in the Balanced Body tradition, Toni brings this additional style to P/oP making P/oP the only studio offering a variety of Pilates methods.
P/oP (finally) welcomes massage therapist Nicole Barnes. I recently referred Nicole to a dear friend who was looking for a good therapist. After a few sessions with Nicole my friend sent me the following email:
"Just wanted to tell you that Nicole is STELLAR! She really knows what she is doing. Is professional and very knowledgeable about one’s anatomy and stroooong! Just had my 5th massage and am really feeling the benefits. xoxoC "
And, thank you all for your votes for Pasadena Weekly’s annual “Best of” issue. We did it again! We won “BEST PILATES STUDIO for 2017“ for the second year in a row.
Thank you all again. You truly are the best. -Maria

“The Artful Eye”, advanced teaching skills. Presented by Constance Holder
One of the most essential skills of any teacher is the ability to “see” a student or client. Sessions should develop into the most appropriate structure for an individual on any given day and be specifically designed to offer optimum results in a short period of time. It is critical to see beyond the surface, understand how the body works and offer guidance through safe and effective exercises.

“Creative Teaching”, enhancing group class teaching, Presented by Bonnie Sessions
A teacher of movement (Pilates, weight training, yoga, etc.…) can be demanding and draining physically and emotionally. If we are not careful as our teaching career advances overtime can lead to burn out, poor quality of teaching and eventually loss of valuable business. Our passion enables us to help others but our love of what we do must also protect us from the challenges that accompany this passion. Over the 25 plus years of teaching I have been able to develop a number of successful strategies to maintain a fulfilling and successful Pilates teaching career.

“Pilates for Athletes using the Wunda Chair & Foam Roller”, Presenter, Sheri Long
Athletes represent a very specific population and as such special considerations should be applied to serving their needs. This workshop will guide the instructor through the unique and valuable applications available for the athlete directly related to the Pilates method. Challenging muscle groups with precision of movement in strength, flexibility and endurance, will provide the necessary tools to structure demanding, yet well rounded sessions, for the professional (or weekend) athlete in your studio.

$250 after August 1

“Unwinding Scoliosis with Pilates” Presented by Karen Clippinger
Research suggests that addressing the rotational component of scoliosis is vital for improving scoliosis. After discussing the basic anatomical and biomechanical changes of the spine associated with scoliosis, this session will focus on utilizing counter rotation and lateral flexion combined with distraction of the spine to attempt to lessen the asymmetries associated with scoliosis. These principles will be applied progressively from standing posture to strengthening exercises to functional movement. Participants will participate in novel exercises utilizing elastic bands and Pilates apparatus, as well as learn cueing for classical exercises that can be utilized to maximize benefits for your clients.
9am – 4pm
$200 before October 1
$250 after October 1
Sunday, December 3, 2017
“Shoulder Mechanics” Presented by Meredith Rogers
This workshop will focus on the correct mechanics of the shoulder girdle - particularly relating to the Pilates repertoire. Immaculate control and sequencing of movement are essential in this method. Higher-level Pilates challenges, coupled with everyday activities demanding shoulder involvement, can easily create negative movement patterns and compensations. Poor shoulder stability, mobility and correct patterning of movement are certainly the most frequently encountered dysfunctions amongst clients. This subject is one that needs to be addressed as its implications are far reaching.
9am – 4pm
$200 before November 10
$250 after November 10
R.I.P. Federico Alvarado
Fred peacefully passed away in his sleep yesterday morning, April 18, at the age of 96.
Fred was a regular at the Pilates studio. He would accompany his daughter, Judy, and son-in-law, Michael, on their Pilates sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. For a time I would have Fred do a 10 to 20 minute routine to get him moving and his muscles active. As recently as a few months ago I watched him quickly lift up his arms to catch a large ball that Michael had thrown to him.
However, as Fred got older and grew increasingly less energetic he would hand the Thera-band back to me or Michael, and was most likely thinking, “No thank you.” :)
Instead, he preferred to sit and look through Maxim magazines. He appreciated beauty and always had a compliment for all the ladies in the studio. Michael occasionally brought him a beer to sip on while he waited.
Fred was a great sport and came along with us on a few dinners after Pilates, never complained and always enjoyed a glass (or two) of wine.
We will miss you, Fred....DAH-RAH-DAH-RAH.....!
Judy and Michael, our deepest condolences go out to you.
