Shoulder Replacement Surgery by Dorothy Waterman
MY SHOULDER SAGA
ON VALENTINES DAY I GOT A NEW SHOULDER. FOR 3 YEARS AFTER I DISLOCATED IT I TRIED EVERYTHING I COULD TO AVOID SURGERY. I WENT TO SEVERAL PHYSICAL THERAPISTS AND DID THE EXERCISES THEY PRESCRIBED. I GOT ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENTS, MASSAGE THERAPY, MYOFASCIAL RELEASE, CUPPING AND CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTS. ONE DOCTOR GAVE ME HYALURONIC ACID INJECTIONS.
I FINALLY GAVE UP AND DECIDED DR. JOHN ITAMURA COULD HELP ME. HE CAME HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FROM SEVERAL PEOPLE I RESPECT, INCLUDING MY CLIENT, MY DOCTOR AND MY PHYSICAL THERAPIST.
THE NAME OF MY PROCEDURE IS TOTAL REVERSE SHOULDER REPLACEMENT ARTHOPLASTY. DUE TO EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO MY ROTATOR CUFF MUSCLES, THIS WAS THE BEST CHOICE FOR ME.
I HAD MY SURGERY AT WHITE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. Two VERY HANDSOME ANESTHESIOLOGISTS CAREFULLY GAVE MY RIGHT ARM A NERVE BLOCK, ANDTHEN OFF WE WENT TO SURGERY. THE PROCEDURE TOOK 1 HOUR AND 30 MINUTES. WHEN I WOKE UP MY ARM WAS IN A ROBO-COP SLING! I HAD A DRAIN ATTACHED TO IT AND FELT NO PAIN, JUST TIRED.
AFTER GETTING TO MY PRIVATE ROOM, MY OXYGEN LEVEL, BLOOD PRESSURE AND PULSE WERE ALL BEING MONITORED, JUST LIKE YOU SEE ON TV SHOWS WITH THE PATIENT HOOKED UP TO ALL THOSE MACHINES.
THE GENERAL ANESTHETIC MADE ME DROWSY AND MY OXYGEN LEVELS GOT SO LOW THE ALARM WENT OFF A LOT. IT WAS HARD FOR ME TO UNDERSTAND WHY I HAD LOW OXYGEN WHEN I HAD JUST TAUGHT 2 AEROBICS CLASSES THE DAY BEFORE.
THE NURSING STAFF WAS VERY KIND AND HELPFUL WHENEVER I CALLED FOR THEM. A FEW OF MY FRIENDS CAME TO VISIT ME THE DAY AFTER SURGERY. OF COURSE MY WONDERFUL HUSBAND HELPED WITH EVERYTHING HE COULD.
WHILE RECUPERATING IN THE HOSPITAL, I HAD TO HAVE CALF MASSAGERS ON MY LEGS CONSTANTLYTO PREVENT BLOOD CLOTS. AN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST GAVE ME A SERIES OF HAND EXERCISES TO DO TO PREVENT TOTAL ATROPHY TO MY RIGHT ARM MUSCLES.
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE I HAD NO APPETITE! I COULD NOT CLEAN MY PLATE! THE FOOD SERVED TO ME WAS ACTUALLY QUITE GOOD AND NOURISHING! SALMON AND SALAD AND GREEN BEANS! I LOST A FEW POUNDS IN THOSE FEW DAYS. I AMOK WITH THAT, TOO.
GETTING HOME WAS PAINFUL. EVERY BUMP ON THE CAR RIDE HOME HURT LIKE HELL!!
I CONTINUED TO TAKE THE PAIN MEDICATION AND PENICILLIN AS PRESCRIBED.
AT HOME I TURNED MY RECLINER CHAIR INTO MY HOSPITAL BED. HOOKED UP TO THE ICE MACHINE AND CALF MASSAGER, I WATCHED HOURS OF TV WITH MY HUSBAND AND FELL IN AND OUT OF SLEEP ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY. SUNDAY I STARTED FEELING MORE ENERGETIC AND ASKED DR. ITAMURA IF I COULD STOP TAKING THE PAIN MEDS SINCE I NO LONGER HAD PAIN. I HAVE BEEN PAIN FREE EVER SINCE AND NO MORE MEDS.
I HAVE BEEN WALKING 3 MILES A DAY THIS WEEK AND FEELING 85% NORMAL. IAM SO GRATEFUL FOR ALL THE SUPPORT FROM MY HUSBAND, MY CLIENTS AND MY FRIENDS.
TODAY IS MY FOLLOW UP APPOINTMENT WITH DOCTOR ITAMURA. I HAVE MANY QUESTIONS FOR HIM: WHEN CAN I SHOWER? WHEN CAN I DRIVE? WHEN CAN I RETURN TO WORKING WITH MY CLIENTS?
I WANT ANYONE WHO READS THIS TO KNOW HOW PROFOUNDLY GRATEFUL I AM FOR THIS JOURNEY I AM ON. I HAVE DEVELOPED A MEDITATION PRACTICE, AND A DAILY GRATITUDE JOURNAL, WHICH HELPS ME FIND THE GOOD IN THE SEEMINGLY INCONVENIENT AND HUMBLING EXPERIENCE OF HAVING ONLY ONE HAND TO USE 24/7.

PILATES A THON !!! FUNDRAISER
Dear friends and family,
My son Jake's non-for-profit public school Odyssey Charter is having a fundraiser. Our fundraising contributions will directly support our Physical Education, Technology, Art, and Gardening Programs, as well as provide Teaching Assistants in the classrooms.
Our annual fundraising event is SPELLAPALOOZA, a hilarious Adult Spelling Bee, designed to stump spellers with impossibly difficult and obscure words. Our third grade team is the Beewitchers, and we will be dressing up as witches and warlocks. The more money we raise, the more "cheats" she'll be able to buy! Cheats include "Google it," "ask a friend," and "second chance." These cheats are expensive. Help us win, but more importantly, help us raise money for our school. ANY AMOUNT HELPS!
My plan is to have a full morning of Pilates Reformer Classes where all proceeds will directly go to the event ( I need those cheats !) . You can make a reservation with me to save yourself a spot which are limited to 4 per hour.
If you cannot make this event but would like to support the school please click on link below. Alternately I will give you Foundation name to write check to.
When: Saturday February 25

Happy New Year from P/oP
Happy New Year!
In September 2016, we hit our one year anniversary marking our first milestone at P/oP.
We were voted “Best Pilates Studio” in Pasadena by the Pasadena Weekly.
In addition, we welcomed Pilates Instructor Brittany Barnes and Physical Therapist Alison Gallup. If you are interested in an assessment with Alison, she is available to assist you with proper exercise techniques and protocols.
In 2016, Satoko started a Mat Class, which is held on Monday mornings at 8:30. It’s a great class to add that can complement your current fitness regimen. (Satoko also teaches Pilates in Japanese, which might be a good opportunity to brush up on your Japanese language skills.)
P/oP also hosted several incredible workshops with Master Instructors Sheri Long and Karen Clippinger. Both events sold out! We are currently busy booking more for this year.
In the new year, we welcome Pilates Instructor Amelia Wise who will be offering Reformer classes on Monday evenings, beginning January 16 at 6:00 and 7:00. These will be available to book online.
We will also be kicking off the new year with an “Introduction to Mindfulness” class in February that will be taught by Roger Nolan, M.A., LMFT. I hope you can join us.
On behalf of Abby, Satoko, Charletha, Dorothy, Brittany and Maria, we thank you for your continued support.
Best wishes for 2017.

Satoko in Japan
Satoko and her family have returned to Japan for the month of July to visit her family in Kyoto. We all miss her very much. Here are some highlights of her trip.
Pasadena Block Party and South Pasadena Arts Crawl
It's a great time of year to take advantage of the many cultural happenings throughout the city. The annual Block Party on the Colorado Bridge is coming up this weekend as is the Arts Crawl in South Pasadena.
Don't Miss the Latest Event Downtown " Smorgasburg LA "
This is the latest event taking place downtown a Flea Market and Independent Food Stall Marketplace. I have two friends with daughters doing their start ups here.
Chef Casey Felton and her partner Armen Piskoulian own and run " Banh Oui " Both are classically trained and have cooked at some of the top restaurants in the LA area, including Providence, Red Medicine and The Tasting Kitchen. Apparently they were over run with orders last Sunday for hours on end.
This quote from an attendee : " They initiated a new dish - Vietnamese chicken wings with a killer spicy sweet sauce. It was sooo good. That dish, along with their pork-belly banh mi sandwich, essentially grabbed all the orders coming in. The place was a big hit. "
Hayley Dox is doing vintage. Her company is : Big Daddy's Antiques".
I tried to make it last Sunday but ended up losing my flip-flops. Somehow I could 't see myself barefoot on the streets of downtown LA in ninety five degree weather. YUK!
Next Sunday I will be first in line !!
I will report my findings....
